The Specialist Skills Stream of the Skills in Demand (SID) visa (Subclass 482) is designed to attract highly skilled, top-tier professionals to Australia. This stream targets individuals in high-demand, high-salary roles that are crucial for Australia's national productivity and economic growth. It offers a fast-tracked pathway for businesses to secure global talent in key areas, excluding most trade, machinery operator, driver, and labourer occupations. At Anand Migration, we work with both employers and exceptional skilled migrants to facilitate these critical placements, ensuring a smooth and expedited visa process for those contributing to Australia's leading industries.
Key Features and Requirements of the Specialist Skills Stream:
-
Targeted Occupations (ANZSCO Major Groups): Unlike the Core Skills Stream which relies on a specific occupation list, the Specialist Skills Stream is open to most occupations within specific ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) Major Groups, namely:
- Major Group 1: Managers
- Major Group 2: Professionals
- Major Group 4: Community and Personal Service Workers (excluding certain roles)
- Major Group 5: Clerical and Administrative Workers (excluding certain roles)
- Major Group 6: Sales Workers (excluding certain roles)
- Exclusions: It specifically excludes occupations classified as Trades Workers (Major Group 3), Machinery Operators and Drivers (Major Group 7), and Labourers (Major Group 8).
- High-Income Threshold: A key differentiator is the requirement for a significantly higher salary. The nominated position must guarantee an annual salary meeting or exceeding the Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT). From July 1, 2025, the SSIT will be AUD 141,210. This threshold is indexed annually.
- Fast-Tracked Processing: A major benefit of this stream is the commitment to expedited visa processing. The Department of Home Affairs aims for a median processing time of approximately 7 days, making it the quickest pathway within the SID visa program.
- Employer Sponsorship: As with other SID streams, you must be nominated by an approved Australian employer (Standard Business Sponsor) who has a genuine need for your specialized skills.
- Experience: At least 12 months full-time equivalent in your field within the last 5 years.
- English: "Competent English" required (e.g., IELTS 5.0 overall, no band less than 4.5).
- Health and Character: All applicants, including any accompanying family members, must meet Australia's health and character requirements.
- Pathway to Permanent Residency: The Specialist Skills Stream also provides a clear pathway to permanent residency. After working for your sponsoring employer for 2 years (as per changes from December 2024), eligible visa holders may apply for the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) visa. Time spent with any approved employer on a Specialist Skills visa will count towards PR requirements.
- Enhanced Mobility: Visa holders in this stream also benefit from increased flexibility, allowing them to move between approved sponsors with a 180-day grace period to find new employment if their current employment ceases.
- No Age Limit for Visa Application: There is generally no age restriction for applying for the 482 Specialist Skills Stream visa.
